Full Review
ASICS has been making court shoes longer than most of us have been alive, and when they finally turned their attention to pickleball, they did it properly. The Gel-Renma isn’t a tennis shoe with a sticker on the box — it’s a ground-up pickleball design with the geometry, traction pattern, and cushioning placement tuned for the way pickleball players actually move. Short bursts, hard split-steps, lots of lateral kick-out, almost no long sprints.
Build & Quality
The upper is engineered mesh with synthetic overlays in all the high-stress zones — toe drag area, medial side, the lateral wrap that takes a beating on hard cuts. Stitching is clean and the toe bumper extends further up the shoe than you’d expect. After a couple of months of three-times-a-week play, our test pair showed minimal upper damage.
The outsole is AHARPLUS, ASICS’ high-abrasion rubber compound, laid out in a herringbone pattern that’s optimized for the kind of multi-directional grip pickleball demands. Out of the box the grip is borderline aggressive — on slick gym floors you can almost feel it tugging at your ankles on hard pivots. After 10 hours or so it settles into something more livable but still tenacious.
The Trusstic system through the midfoot keeps the shoe from twisting under load, which matters more than you’d think when you’re lunging for an Erne attempt. Cushioning is rearfoot GEL with EVA forefoot — heel-strike runners and players with aging knees will appreciate the impact absorption, while the firmer forefoot still gives you decent court feel during dink rallies.
Performance
This shoe shines indoors. On gym floors and proper indoor pickleball surfaces, the AHARPLUS outsole locks in like Velcro. You can commit to aggressive lateral movement without worrying about a slide-and-roll situation. The GEL heel cushioning takes the sting out of a long tournament day — by match four you’ll notice your knees thanking you.
Outdoors on textured concrete or asphalt, the story gets more complicated. The grip is still excellent but the AHARPLUS compound, while durable for an indoor shoe, will not last as long as a Goodyear-rubber outsole on rough outdoor surfaces. If you’re an outdoor-only player on rough concrete, expect to replace these in 4-6 months of heavy play. Indoor players will get a year or more.
Stability is a strong point. The lateral wrap and Trusstic shank work together to keep you planted during direction changes, and there’s no sloppy heel-cup movement. The 9mm drop is on the higher end for court shoes and won’t suit minimalists, but if you come from a running background it’ll feel familiar and supportive.
The fit runs slightly narrow in the standard width — pickleball players with wider feet should grab the wide variant rather than sizing up. Break-in takes about three sessions; the synthetic overlays soften and the outsole loses its sticky-fresh aggression. After that the shoe disappears under you, which is exactly what you want from a court shoe.
The Gel-Renma isn’t the lightest pickleball shoe on the market — at 13.4 ounces it’s a noticeable step up from minimalist options like the K-Swiss Express Light. But what you gain in cushioning, stability, and durability is well worth the trade for most players. Pros who train all day in the Gel-Renma report that it’s the shoe their knees prefer over anything else they’ve tried, and that’s not a small endorsement.
The Verdict
If you've got cranky knees, play on hard indoor courts, or just want a shoe that won't slide out from under you on a hard split-step, the Gel-Renma is the one. Outdoor concrete warriors will burn through the outsole faster than they'd like, but for indoor and gym-floor players this is one of the best dedicated pickleball shoes you can buy.
